This International Women’s Day, we want to highlight the work of brave women defending their communities despite facing violence, and especially honour martyred Filipina environmental defenders.
Out of 80 cases filed on the EJAtlas so far, 33 women and girls were killed across 14 cases identified in collaboration with civil society organization Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment between 2002 and 2022. 27 of these women were environmental leaders, group members, and protesters murdered to prevent them from mobilizing against corporations and projects threatening their communities and the environments they live in.
